Bringing
to you on CD-ROM classic 19th century reference works relating to American military
history and genealogy
We've opened up our
own archives, and searched high and low, to bring you classic references that make your
research easier than ever! Think of it -- a CD containing images of a long-lost classic,
unpublished work or other significant (or rare) reference pertaining to American military
history. Or, a CD containing a rare, unpublished or out-of-print genealogy. That's what
Digital Classics is all about.
Each of our CDs
affords the historian or genealogist unparalleled ease of access to information about the
American Revolution, Barbary Wars, Mexican War, War of the Rebellion (Civil War), and
other armed conflicts, or to classic genealogies. Our CDs replicate the actual original
printed pages as images, in easy-to-use Adobe PDF format. All books are complete and
unabridged.
Books are reproduced
on CD in Adobe Acrobat Reader format because this format gives the look and feel of the
original rare book. You will find each CD has text that looks like real typography (except
for CDs replicating handwritten manuscripts) with proper headlines, subheads, page numbers, running
heads, and feet. We've added a bookmark index for ease of navigation. Many of our books
were originally published with indexes which are included. You can print out pages as
desired; each is printed in the original typography.
Each reference is
produced in Adobe Acrobat 4 PDF format and ships with the Adobe Acrobat Reader (Version
4). If you do not have Acrobat Reader Version 4 installed on your system you will need to
have it installed to read this PDF file as it is not compatible with earlier Acrobat
Reader formats.
PDF is an acronym for
"Portable Document Format." PDF is a file format created by Adobe Systems that
lets you view and print a file exactly as the author designed it, without needing to have
the same application or fonts used to create the file. This enables you to see and print
classic references exactly as they were originally printed. Since its introduction in 1993,
PDF has become an Internet standard for electronic distribution that faithfully preserves
the look and feel of the original document complete with fonts, colors, images, and
layout. Through the reader you can magnify (zoom-in) or reduce (zoom-out) to suit your needs, display two pages at once, etc. You can also print pages, as desired, complete with original typography.
We use the best
original texts available and we check them carefully. Pages are individually processed
through our quality control for readability and appearance. Many rare books have brittle,
aged pages which we cleaned as best as possible. However, because we are reproducing an
original text any typographic errors present at the time it was printed remain.
