standard reference containing over 14,000 officers of Continental Army and State militias

Records
of Living Officers of the U. S. Navy and Marine Corps - 1870.
Hamersly,
Lewis R. At the time this classic was published
in 1870, while the military service of army officers had been recorded by several authors,
the record of Navy and Marine Corps officers had been wholly neglected. This definitive
reference records the service of all living officers of the U. S. Navy (from the grade of
Admiral down to Lieutenant-Commander) and Marine Corps (from General down to Captain),
inclusive, including full Surgeons, Paymasters and Engineers, as appeared in official Navy
Register for 1870. This information was generally verified by information obtained from
the officers themselves and is richly detailed: birth date and place, duty stations,
promotions, etc. Includes service from the Barbary Wars, Mexican War, Civil War and later.
Hamersly, a Marine Corps Lieutenant, faithfully compiled this list from official sources
and with the encouragement of the Secretary of the Navy and David D. Porter, Vice Admiral,
whose endorsements are printed therein.
